Today’s Christmas cookie of the day: Candy Cane Cookies!

When I was little, I absolutely loved these almond-flavored candy cane cookies. They look gorgeous on a cookie platter and are fun to eat for all ages!

Candy Cane Cookies
1 cup soft shortening
1 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar
1 egg
1 ½ teaspoon almond flavoring
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix above ingredients well.

2 ½ cups sifted flour
1 tsp salt
½ tsp red food coloring

Mix flour and salt, stir into above mixture.

Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into one half. Roll 1 tsp each color dough on lightly floured board into a strip about 4” long. Place strips side by side. Press lightly together and twist like a rope. Put on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top for handle. Bake 9 minutes in a 375 oven. Makes about 4 dozen.
